Summer is one of the busiest times to visit Canmore, and with Canada Day landing smack in the middle of peak season, our quiet mountain town comes alive with energy. Whether you’re here specifically to celebrate the holiday or it just happens to coincide with your visit to the Rockies, you’ll find no shortage of ways to partake in the celebration.
Canmore’s Canada Day events kick off early and run well into the evening, so staying at least one night in town is a good idea (but making a weekend of it is even better!). Luckily, Solara Resort sits right on the edge of downtown within easy walking or biking distance of just about everything, so you can enjoy the festivities without the headache of traffic or finding parking. Speaking of biking, be sure to stop by the front desk to ask about complimentary mountain bike or fat tire bike rentals, part of the resort's Stay® | Well amenities program.
Canada Day Parade
The Canada Day Parade is a highlight of the holiday, drawing both locals and visitors to Main Street downtown for a lively, colourful procession. You'll see a bit of everything, which is one of the things that makes it one of the best parades of the year: several school marching bands from across Alberta, elaborately decorated floats from community businesses and organizations, and traditional First Nations music and dance performances, plus a few surprises.
To get a prime viewing spot, arrive early—really early. Some people set up chairs just after sunrise! You're welcome to bring your own chair or blanket, or simply stand along the road, but another great option is to grab a seat at a downtown restaurant or cafe with a patio. What could be better than watching the parade festivities while enjoying a meal or drink? Some excellent spots include The Grizzly Paw for local craft beer, Communitea Cafe for a refreshing smoothie, or Blake for a delicious brunch with mountain views. While you're down here, be sure to stroll around downtown and check out some of the other local attractions, including Policeman's Creek Boardwalk, the Engine Bridge, and art installations.
Rotary Club of Canmore Canada Day Breakfast
Start your day with a classic Canada Day tradition—the Rotary Club of Canmore’s annual pancake breakfast in Centennial Park. Running from 9:00 to 11:00 am, this community event is a local favourite among things to do for free. Note that while the breakfast itself is truly complimentary, donations are highly encouraged and appreciated, with proceeds supporting local community initiatives.
Expect a hearty serving of pancakes, sausage, and all the fixings, along with plenty of conversation and coffee to fuel you for the day’s upcoming festivities. With a lively, friendly atmosphere and a great turnout every year, this is a fantastic way to kick off your Canada Day celebrations.
34th Annual Canmore Nordic Ski Club Canada Day Fun Run and Walk
Looking for a more active way to start the holiday? The Canmore Nordic Ski Club’s annual Canada Day Family Fun Run & Walk is the perfect choice. The event features options for 3km, 5km, and 10km routes, making it one of the most accessible Canmore activities for all ages and fitness levels. Bring the whole family and start a new summer tradition! The race kicks off at 9:00 am in Centennial Park—perfect timing for those who either want to work up an appetite before the pancake breakfast or those hoping to burn off the extra carbs after eating.
Whether you’re aiming for a new personal best or simply taking a leisurely walk through town, the race is a fun, relaxed way to participate in the day’s revelry. Plus, with the stunning Rocky Mountain backdrop, it’s hard to find a more scenic setting for a morning sweat session.
Evening Celebrations
After a full day of parades, food, outdoor fun, and socializing with old and new friends, the town often holds a grand finale in the evening with a spectacular fireworks display at Millennium Park. It's important to note that due to wildfire concerns, officials sometimes have to cancel the fireworks in Canmore or otherwise make changes to the event at the last minute.
When they do get the green light, arrive at the park early to snag a good viewing spot. If you don't get a great spot, several places around town serve as alternative best places to watch fireworks, including the Engine Bridge and any nearby hilltops. If you're staying at Solara Resort, you're in luck—select suites offer private balconies, creating a unique, exclusive-feeling way to enjoy the show.
