Celebrate Canada Day in Canmore: Fireworks, Parades, and Local Fun

Summer is one of the busiest times to visit Canmore, and with Canada Day landing smack in the middle of peak season, our quiet mountain town comes alive with energy. Whether you’re here specifically to celebrate the holiday or it just happens to coincide with your visit to the Rockies, you’ll find no shortage of ways to partake in the celebration.

Canmore’s Canada Day events kick off early and run well into the evening, so staying at least one night in town is a good idea (but making a weekend of it is even better!). Luckily, Solara Resort sits right on the edge of downtown within easy walking or biking distance of just about everything, so you can enjoy the festivities without the headache of traffic or finding parking. Speaking of biking, be sure to stop by the front desk to ask about complimentary mountain bike or fat tire bike rentals, part of the resort's Stay® | Well amenities program

Canada Day Parade

The Canada Day Parade is a highlight of the holiday, drawing both locals and visitors to Main Street downtown for a lively, colourful procession. You'll see a bit of everything, which is one of the things that makes it one of the best parades of the year: several school marching bands from across Alberta, elaborately decorated floats from community businesses and organizations, and traditional First Nations music and dance performances, plus a few surprises.

To get a prime viewing spot, arrive early—really early. Some people set up chairs just after sunrise! You're welcome to bring your own chair or blanket, or simply stand along the road, but another great option is to grab a seat at a downtown restaurant or cafe with a patio. What could be better than watching the parade festivities while enjoying a meal or drink? Some excellent spots include The Grizzly Paw for local craft beer, Communitea Cafe for a refreshing smoothie, or Blake for a delicious brunch with mountain views. While you're down here, be sure to stroll around downtown and check out some of the other local attractions, including Policeman's Creek Boardwalk, the Engine Bridge, and art installations.

Rotary Club of Canmore Canada Day Breakfast

Start your day with a classic Canada Day tradition—the Rotary Club of Canmore’s annual pancake breakfast in Centennial Park. Running from 9:00 to 11:00 am, this community event is a local favourite among things to do for free. Note that while the breakfast itself is truly complimentary, donations are highly encouraged and appreciated, with proceeds supporting local community initiatives.

Expect a hearty serving of pancakes, sausage, and all the fixings, along with plenty of conversation and coffee to fuel you for the day’s upcoming festivities. With a lively, friendly atmosphere and a great turnout every year, this is a fantastic way to kick off your Canada Day celebrations.

34th Annual Canmore Nordic Ski Club Canada Day Fun Run and Walk

Looking for a more active way to start the holiday? The Canmore Nordic Ski Club’s annual Canada Day Family Fun Run & Walk is the perfect choice. The event features options for 3km, 5km, and 10km routes, making it one of the most accessible Canmore activities for all ages and fitness levels. Bring the whole family and start a new summer tradition! The race kicks off at 9:00 am in Centennial Park—perfect timing for those who either want to work up an appetite before the pancake breakfast or those hoping to burn off the extra carbs after eating.

Whether you’re aiming for a new personal best or simply taking a leisurely walk through town, the race is a fun, relaxed way to participate in the day’s revelry. Plus, with the stunning Rocky Mountain backdrop, it’s hard to find a more scenic setting for a morning sweat session.

Evening Celebrations

After a full day of parades, food, outdoor fun, and socializing with old and new friends, the town often holds a grand finale in the evening with a spectacular fireworks display at Millennium Park. It's important to note that due to wildfire concerns, officials sometimes have to cancel the fireworks in Canmore or otherwise make changes to the event at the last minute.

When they do get the green light, arrive at the park early to snag a good viewing spot. If you don't get a great spot, several places around town serve as alternative best places to watch fireworks, including the Engine Bridge and any nearby hilltops. If you're staying at Solara Resort, you're in luck—select suites offer private balconies, creating a unique, exclusive-feeling way to enjoy the show.

Spring Break in Canmore: Activities for the Whole Family

If your ideal vision of spring break involves exploring and relaxing in the mountains, consider heading to Canmore. This incredibly beautiful landscape in the heart of the Canadian Rockies begins to thaw and bloom in the springtime, offering the unique opportunity to experience its beauty and tranquility without the crowds. From mountain adventures to Canmore family-friendly attractions indoors (and underground!), this small town is the perfect place for your crew to connect and create lasting memories.

Top 5 Family-Friendly Canmore Spring Adventures

The family activities Canmore offers truly have something for every interest and age group.

Scenic Walks and Hikes

Warmer, longer days, and fewer people on the trails make this one of the best, most underrated times of year to hike. Because of constantly changing conditions and a very real risk of avalanches in the spring, stick to shorter, easier trails (and bring a picnic!). Earlier in the season, you can also snowshoe or cross-country ski on many trails.

Here are some of our top recommended options for this transitional season.

  • Policeman's Creek Boardwalk: This 4-kilometre (2-mile) boardwalk trail runs right along the creek through downtown, connecting several other trails and offering excellent wildlife viewing opportunities year-round—elk and deer, in particular

  • Three Sisters Creek Waterfalls: 2 km (1.24 miles) one-way to two small falls and excellent views of the iconic Three Sisters peaks. Start near the Canmore Train Playground.

  • Grotto Canyon Ice Walk: 7.15 km (4.4 miles) out-and-back through a spectacular canyon to frozen waterfalls of ice.

  • Troll Falls: 4.7 kilometres (2.9 miles) out-and-back in Kananaskis Country, about 30 minutes from Solara Resort & Spa.

It should go without saying, but keep an especially close eye on weather conditions this time of year, and bring some extra cold-weather gear for layering. A few good-to-have items include a packable layering jacket such as a puffy or fleece, an extra pair of socks, gloves, and a pair of microspikes you can easily throw on over your shoes.

Indoor Climbing

When the temperamental spring weather is less than favourable, head indoors. Local rock climbing gyms let you get a challenging workout without having to grapple with the elements. Elevation Place, the town's community recreation centre and one of the most popular Canmore family-friendly attractions has a climbing gym with both open hours and structured programs ranging from children's and introductory classes to workshops for advanced climbers. Just down the road from Elevation Place, Canmore Climbing Gym has similar offerings. Grab a drop-in day pass for as little as $11 and stop in seven days a week.

Wildlife Watching

Arguably one of the best family activities Canmore has to offer come springtime, spotting wildlife is totally free and never the same adventure twice. Wild animals are more active this time of the year as it warms up, making this one of the best seasons to spot elk, moose, bears, and bighorn sheep. As a huge bonus, you also have the opportunity to spot baby animals! Deer, elk, and moose have their little ones late in spring, while bears give birth in their dens during hibernation, emerging with adorable cubs in the spring.

While local outfitters offer wildlife tours year-round, you can easily head out on your own. Drive Spray Lakes Road past the Nordic Centre, where you'll also get a fantastic overview of Canmore. The incredibly scenic 48-kilometre Bow Valley Parkway between Banff and Lake Louise is another wildlife hotspot. In either place, the best time to spot animals is just after sunrise and just before sunset.

Caving

Consider going underground as part of your Canmore spring adventures. Canmore Cave Tours offers real wild caving adventures in Rat's Nest Cave year-round. No matter what the weather is like above ground, the cave maintains a temperature of 5°C (41°F), making it one of the best tours in Canmore in any season. Unlike many "show caves," Rat's Nest is truly wild and undeveloped, offering an unforgettable adventure for your family. Choose from two tours, the four-hour Explorer or the six-hour Adventurer, or sign up for a caving class.

Spa Day

There's no question that most visitors come to the Rockies for epic adventures, but a bit of downtime is important, too. The Recovery Zone Spa lets you indulge in both relaxation and pampering—much-needed after days jam-packed with checking out all the Canmore activities. Book a massage or session in the specialty infrared or cedar saunas, experience the rush of a polar plunge, or try out a reiki treatment.

Itinerary: 5 Days of Winter in Canmore & Kananaskis

Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Canmore is your ultimate home base for a winter getaway that's magical, adventurous, and relaxing all at once. With cozy accommodations, a prime location, loads of onsite amenities, and access to endless activities both indoors and out, Solara Resort offers everything you need to make the most of your winter vacation.

Whether you’re seeking thrilling outdoor adventures or quiet indoor indulgences, we put together this 5-day itinerary for winter to help you experience the magic of Canmore and Kananaskis Country.

Day 1: Skiing or Snowboarding

Kick off your adventure with an action-packed day on the slopes. Canmore is perfectly situated for easy access to several world-class ski resorts, with two in particular very close by: Sunshine Village and Mount Norquay, both just 30 minutes—and especially scenic drives—from Solara Resort & Spa.

  • Sunshine Village: Home to Canada's ONLY heated chairlift, the Teepee Town LX, as well as multiple terrain parks and off-slope activities that include sightseeing on the Angel Express or Standish lifts, nighttime s'more pits, tobogganing, snowshoeing in Sunshine Meadows, and more.

  • Mount Norquay: A smaller, family-friendly ski resort, Mount Norquay is perfect for beginners or those looking for a more relaxed day on the mountain for their winter vacation. It’s also one of the only resorts in Banff with night skiing, as well as home to the longest tubing lanes in the province.

After a full day on the slopes, stop into Lone Pine Pub for a great après scene and then return to Solara Resort to unwind with a soak in the hot tub or a relaxing evening by the fire.

Day 2: Grotto Canyon Icewalk or Indoor Rock Climbing (and Spa Time!)

Start Day 2 of your winter vacation with a unique adventure: the Grotto Canyon Icewalk. This 7-kilometre (4.4 miles) roundtrip trek winds through a narrow slot canyon, walking right over a frozen creek bed and ending at a waterfall of ice. You can DIY this hike, but many local outfitters also lead guided trips, providing ice cleats, trekking poles, and other necessary equipment. Bonus: the trailhead is just 10 minutes from Solara Resort.

Alternatively, you can tackle an indoor adventure at Elevation Place, one of the top Canmore attractions. Seasoned climbers and beginners alike can enjoy a variety of climbing walls and challenges. This is an especially great activity for snowy or rainy days.

Recovery Zone Spa

However you spend your morning, you deserve to treat yourself to a relaxing afternoon at Solara’s Recovery Zone Spa. Indulge in therapeutic massage, a sauna session, or a Reiki treatment to rejuvenate your body.

Day 3: Explore Spray Valley Provincial Park

Add discovering the serene beauty of Spray Valley Provincial Park to your Canmore itinerary for winter. About one hour away from the resort, you can explore many of the trails here, ranging from beginner-friendly to challenging, on snowshoes, cross-country skis, or fat bikes. This vast wilderness area offers endless trails, from beginner-friendly routes to more challenging treks. Be sure to ask about complimentary fat tire bikes or snowshoe rentals at the resort’s front desk, part of our StayⓇ | Well Amenities

Day 4: Cross-Country Skiing at Canmore Nordic Centre and Exploring Downtown

Spend the morning exploring the legendary trails at the Canmore Nordic Centre, just a few minutes from downtown Canmore and a hub for winter activities. Cross-country skiing is the main attraction here, but over 65 kilometres of groomed trails and other facilities invite you to hike, ice skate, try tobogganing, play winter disc golf, or go fat tire biking.

In the afternoon, slow down and simply wander around downtown Canmore, studded with local museums, galleries, shops, and eateries. Learn about the region’s history at the Canmore Museum, warm up with a coffee or local beer (we highly recommend Grizzly Paw Pub), and grab a bite to eat wherever strikes your fancy.

Here are some top Canmore restaurants:

Day 5: Dog Sledding or Day Trip to Lake Louise

Wrap up your itinerary for winter with one of two bucket list-worthy Canmore activities.

Dog Sledding

Experience the unforgettable thrill of dog sledding with Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours. Glide over snow-covered trails in Spray Valley, led by a team of enthusiastic huskies. Winter tours range from two-hour intros to full-day or overnight trips.

Lake Louise

Take a scenic drive to Banff National Park, just under one hour from Solara Resort & Spa. At world-famous Lake Louise, you can spend the afternoon skating on the frozen surface, walking around the lake, or simply sightseeing, surrounded by craggy, towering peaks and the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

Alternative Options

If you have extra time or want to mix up your itinerary, consider these activities:

  • Ice skating around Canmore: Check out the natural outdoor rink at The Pond, just outside of downtown Canmore. The town maintains it, resurfacing it a few times a week and even providing lights for night skating.

  • Banff Upper Hot Springs: Unwind with a soak in the natural thermal pools of Banff Upper Hot Springs.

Fall in Love with Solara - 8 Ways To Immerse Yourself in Fall Colours

With its location nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, fall is one of the most magical times to visit Canmore. Brilliant hues of gold, orange, and red transform the entire region every autumn, making it somehow even more picturesque and tranquil.

Solara Resort & Spa is the perfect jumping-off point to experience it, putting you right in the centre of this postcard-worthy scene. Whether a relaxing getaway is more your vibe or you're more inclined to plan adventure-packed days, there are plenty of ways to immerse yourself in the season's unique beauty.

1. Explore Canmore's Most Iconic Views

Let's be honest: there's no such thing as a 'bad' view in Canmore (or anywhere in the Rockies!), but there’s something especially stunning about the scenery in the fall. Start your day with a cozy fall beverage from one of the local coffee shops. The Maple Latte from Canary Coffee is autumn in a mug, but you can't go wrong with anything at Eclipse Coffee Roasters, either. Warm beverage in hand, head out on foot to some of the best viewpoints around town.

The Canmore Engine Bridge is iconic, while Quarry Lake and the Three Sisters Viewpoint offer peaceful lake settings with mountain reflections without the need for hiking boots—or leaving town. These must-see Canmore attractions are within a short distance of downtown!

2. Take a Larch Hike

Larch trees are a somewhat rare natural wonder, found only in higher-elevation, northern mountain locations (Canmore included!). Their needles turn brilliant golden yellow before shedding in mid-October, making late September to early October the perfect time to spot them. Kananaskis Country is home to several incredible larch hikes, with Mount Lorette Ponds being a flat, easy option under one kilometre and just 30 minutes from Solara. If you’re up for a bit more of a challenge, the 4.5-kilometer (2.8 miles) Arethusa Cirque hike, about one hour away, treats you to blankets of larches in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.

3. Explore on Two Wheels

Biking the popular Legacy Trail is an excellent way to experience fall colours, especially for families. This 22-kilometre paved path runs from Canmore to Banff, offering sweeping views nearly the whole route. Not only is the scenery out of this world in autumn, but it's also far less crowded. In the summer, biking the path is one of the most popular Canmore activities.

No bike? No worries! Solara offers complimentary adult mountain bikes as part of our Stay® | Well amenities program.

4. Go Horseback Riding

Sightseeing on horseback makes the experience even more unforgettable. It's easy to see why this is one of the most popular tours in Canmore for much of the year! Local outfitters, including Boundary Ranch and Rafter Six Ranch offer guided trail rides through October, taking you deep into the wilderness for a bucket list-worthy leaf-peeping experience.

5. Take a Scenic Drive

The Icefields Parkway, widely celebrated as one of the best drives in the world, is only a short distance from many Canmore activities. Starting near Lake Louise, about an hour from Solara, the spectacular road stretches 232 kilometres to Jasper National Park. Along the way, you’ll see incredible fall scenery and have the opportunity to spot wildlife and make roadside stops at places like Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, and Sunwapta Falls.

6. Soak in a Hot Spring

After a day full of adventures, nothing beats soaking in Banff Upper Hot Springs. Just over 30 minutes from Solara inside Banff, the hot springs are a wonderful way to unwind and recharge, especially with the rapidly changing fall scenery surrounding you.

Fun facts: at 1,585 meters in elevation, the hot springs are the highest in Canada, and they've been welcoming visitors since 1886!

7. Experience 'Rock-tober'

Fall, or "Rock-tober" as climbers call it, is prime time for rock climbing in the Bow Valley. The cooler, drier weather makes for excellent climbing conditions, and the fall foliage only adds to the experience. Even if you’ve never climbed before, you can book a guided tour with a local outfitter like Yamnuska Mountain Adventures or Cloud Nine Guides through mid-October.

8. Leaf-Peep From the Sky

For a truly unforgettable leaf-peeping excursion, splurge on a helicopter tour. Soaring above the snow-capped peaks, surrounded by golden and green trees, gives you a completely different perspective of the landscape. A handful of companies offer helicopter tours near Canmore like Alpine Helicopters, and will take you on a bird’s-eye tour of the larches, mountains, and winding rivers that make fall in the Rockies so beautiful.

No matter which Canmore activities you choose, book a stay at Solara Resort as the perfect base to explore all the enchantment of fall.

Paddle Adventures: 8 Breathtaking Paddle Destinations in Canmore and Kananaskis

Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the charming town of Canmore and the expansive Kananaskis Country surrounding it are paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. You'll find every imaginable outdoor adventure here, but the paddling opportunities are especially noteworthy in the summer and fall. With stunning landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and tranquil bodies of water, the Canmore area offers some of the best paddling adventures in Alberta for experienced paddlers and total beginners alike.

Discover the Best Paddle Destinations

From mirror-still lakes to gently flowing rivers, here are eight paddle destinations in Canmore and Kananaskis begging to be explored:

1. Quarry Lake

Just a five-minute drive from downtown Canmore, Quarry Lake is a local favourite for paddling (and hiking, picnicking, fishing, and swimming in the summer...all sorts of Canmore activities!). The small, deep lake is surrounded by towering mountains, sheltering it from the wind. Motorized boats are also not permitted on Quarry Lake, so it really is the perfect beginner-friendly setting for a relaxing paddle.

2. Canmore Reservoir (Rundle Forebay)

Also known as Rundle Forebay, this is easily one of the most popular places to go paddling in Canmore. Like Quarry Lake, it's just a few minutes from downtown, but the reservoir is significantly larger. One of the main reasons it's so popular is because it typically thaws and warms up earlier than most other bodies of water in the area. With its calm blue waters, proximity to town, and stunning mountain views, including that of the iconic Mount Rundle, it's hard to beat for a quick paddle session.

3. Bow River

The Bow River winds through Canmore, offering paddlers a unique perspective of the town and its surroundings. While it's fairly wild in some stretches, the section closest to Canmore is generally pretty calm. The only thing to be aware of is that since it's a river, there's a current to contend with—you can't leisurely paddle out and come back to shore. Instead, you'll need to put in from one spot and take out of the river at another. Luckily, Roam Transit buses offer the perfect solution. There are countless options, but consider taking a bus up toward Banff and then paddling downstream back to Canmore.

4. Goat Pond

"Tiny but mighty" fits Goat Pond well, as this small lake is spectacularly beautiful, rarely crowded, and seems to be almost totally unaffected by wind. It's tucked away in Spray Valley Provincial Park, about 15 minutes from Canmore, making it a perfect quick escape from the hustle and bustle. You'll pass the trailheads for Ha Ling Peak and EEOR on the way, two excellent options for what to do in Canmore if you're up for a multi-sport day of adventure.

Note: you'll need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass to park anywhere within Kananaskis Country.

5. Wedge Pond

Wedge Pond is another small, beautiful paddling destination in Kananaskis Country. This tranquil pond has dramatic views and crystal-clear, unusually warm water. The water temperature makes Wedge Pond a real standout, especially for kids and beginning paddlers. Not only do you have a safe, calm place to paddle, but you can also practice rolling and comfortably take a dip!

6. Barrier Lake

Just inside one of the main entrances into Kananaskis Country, Barrier Lake is a wildly popular paddling destination. The lake's striking turquoise waters and surrounding mountain vistas create a picture-perfect backdrop, but beware that high winds often kick up on the water. It may not be the best option for newbies, but with a sandy beach and nearby hiking trails, there's also a lot more to enjoy here beyond the lake.

7. Spray Lakes Reservoir

The reservoir's long, narrow shape and dramatic mountain backdrop make it a favourite among paddling enthusiasts. While the water is often choppier due to higher altitude and more exposure, the breathtaking scenery and sense of adventure make it worth the effort. Beginners should stick close to the shoreline, in case high winds pick up and make it challenging to paddle back.

8. Kananaskis Lakes (Upper and Lower)

Combined, the Kananaskis Lakes make up one of the largest places to go paddling in Kananaskis Country. These large, glacial-fed lakes offer pristine waters and stunning alpine scenery, along with several launch points. The Lower Lake is often calmer than its upper sibling, but motorized boats are allowed on both lakes, so paddlers may need to deal with boat traffic and wakes.

Paddle Your Way to Unforgettable Memories

Exploring the serene waters of Canmore and Kananaskis Country from a SUP or kayak is an unforgettable experience. With Solara Resort's complimentary paddleboards and other Stay® | Well Amenities, including mountain and fat tire bikes, trekking poles, yoga mats, and much more, plus spacious condo-style suites, you have easy access to everything you need for an adventurous yet comfortable stay.

Whether you're paddling on nearby Quarry Lake or exploring the expansive Kananaskis Lakes, come prepared to create new core memories in this breathtaking part of Alberta.

Summer Getaway! 10 Things to Do in Canmore During the Summers

With gorgeous, larger-than-life Rocky Mountain scenery and an abundance of outdoor activities, Canmore is the ultimate destination for a summer retreat. Whether you're seeking white-knuckle adventures, an idyllic escape from the everyday hustle and bustle, or something in between, you'll find it in this postcard-perfect mountain town.

We've previously featured some of the best things to do in Canmore in the summer, but here, we're highlighting 10 more warm-weather activities to add to your bucket list.

1. Paddle the Waters Around Town

It's no secret that the Bow Valley's sparkling waterways are hubs for some of the best things to do in Canmore. Experience them from a unique perspective by cruising around on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) or kayak for a few hours. Solara resort guests get free SUP rentals, part of our Stay® | Well amenities. If you prefer to take lessons or book a guided tour, head over to Bow Valley SUP & Surf

2. Summit the Iconic Three Sisters

You can't go anywhere in town without noticing the majestic Three Sisters, the three towering peaks that dominate Canmore's skyline. While many sightseeing trails afford closer views and unique angles, one of the best summer activities in Canmore is hiking to the summit—or one of them, anyway. Hikers can tackle Big Sister and Middle Sister in one long, moderately challenging day each, while only experienced alpine climbers should attempt Little Sister.

3. Go Rafting

Whether you opt for an adrenaline-inducing whitewater tour or a scenic float, one of the best things to do in Canmore during the summer is to navigate a river in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. Both Canadian Rockies Rafting and Canmore Raft Tours offer a variety of options, with some excursions departing right from downtown. Even if you have just one hour or so to spare, you can squeeze in this exciting family fun in Canmore.

4. Hit the greens

Canmore's alpine golf courses provide unmatched scenery, not to mention challenges. This summer, try one of the three exceptional courses right in town: Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club, Canmore Golf and Curling Club, or Silvertip Golf Course. There are also a few others within a short, scenic drive—including the renowned Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course.

5. Go Fishing

Year-round, one of the most popular Canmore activities for outdoor enthusiasts is fishing. However, there's something magical about casting a line into cold, crystal-clear mountain waters in the summer. Whether you prefer fly-fishing or a traditional rod and reel, our mountain town offers plenty of opportunities to hook rainbow and brown trout, as well as arctic grayling. If you're just visiting, we highly recommend hiring an experienced guide to put you on some trophy fish. For anglers who prefer a DIY approach, head to Quarry Lake or Grotto Mountain Pond, which is stocked in the summer.

6. Canmore Mountain Market

The end of May signifies the official start of 'market season,' a beloved Canmore summer tradition for over 25 years. Over at Elevation Place (another one of the best things to do in town!), the Canmore Mountain Market takes place every Thursday from the third week of May through early October. Sample fresh local produce, baked goods, meat, coffee, and tea, alongside artisan products including jewelry, home decor, soap, tinctures, and more.

7. Disc Golf at Canmore Nordic Centre

For a different type of golf, challenge your travel partners to a round of disc golf at the Canmore Nordic Centre. Set against the backdrop of the Rockies, this scenic 18-hole course offers outdoor family fun in Canmore for all skill levels.

8. Canmore Folk Music Festival

Held over the Heritage Day long weekend in August, the annual Canmore Folk Music Festival is one of Alberta's most anticipated summer activities. The festival features talented musicians from around the world, but also hosts storytelling events and an immersive kids' area.

9. Tour a Local Distillery

One of the best things to do in Canmore, especially on a hot summer day? Savour the taste of locally crafted spirits at Wild Life Distillery. Pop into the tasting room for a cocktail or sample, or book a weekend distillery tour at the production facility, which includes spirits tasting, a souvenir glass, and a canned cocktail. Solara Resort & Spa guests enjoy an exclusive 20% discount on tours and tastings when they call 403-678-2800 to book.

10. Summit Ha Ling Peak

Summertime is the ideal season to hike up to the summit of Ha Ling Peak, another iconic peak perfectly framing Canmore. While the 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) trek is far from easy, Ha Ling's craggy silhouette looks far more intimidating than it actually is. And with recent trail upgrades, the hike is even more accessible. Especially adventurous souls can conquer the Canmore Triple Crown, hiking three major mountains in one day.

Wondering Where to Stay in Canmore? Enjoy The Stunning View of the Three Sisters At Solara Resort

From endless outdoor excursions to cultural experiences, local shopping, and everything in between, Canmore is the perfect base for summer activities. Pack your bags (bring a good pair of hiking boots!), check out our current offers and packages, and book your stay at Solara Resort.

Spend a Beautiful Day in Downtown Canmore

Canmore serves as the perfect jumping off point to explore Banff National Park and Kananaskis Country, but don't overlook all there is to see and do right in town. Here, the iconic rugged peaks of the Rockies tower over Main Street, creating a stunning backdrop as you stroll around, shop, eat, and drink. Whatever your personal version of the best things to do in Canmore may be, you'll find it in this charming mountain town.

Best Things to Do in Downtown Canmore

Before we dive into all the fun Canmore activities, it's important to know that the city closes Main Street to vehicles in the summer. From late May through Thanksgiving, the stretch between 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue is open to pedestrians and bicycles only, creating a safe, lively, walkable thoroughfare.

1. Start Your Day With Coffee

Downtown Canmore has several fantastic coffee shops, perfect for fueling up for the day's adventures. You honestly can't go wrong with any of them, but Eclipse Coffee Roasters, Beamer's Coffee Bar, and The Pulse are some of the top local favourites.

2. Stroll Policeman's Creek Boardwalk

As far as easy sightseeing trails go, it's hard to top Policeman's Creek. The elevated boardwalk path starts downtown and passes through the forest, leading to outstanding views of the Three Sisters. You can connect to longer hiking trails or, for a morning of family fun in Canmore, stop for a warm drink or treat. Eclipse Coffee Roasters has a second location just off the trail.

3. Walk Across the Historic Engine Bridge

Whether it's your first visit or your tenth, one of the best things to do in Canmore is stroll across the bridge. It spans the Bow River and is one of the best spots for photographing the Three Sisters and Ha Ling Peak. The bridge is also part of the popular 2.1-kilometer (1.3-mile) Bow River Loop Trail if you're up for a longer walk. Keep your eyes open for resident elk hanging around the river.

Pssst...if the bridge seems familiar, you may have seen it in the hit HBO series The Last of Us.

4. Go for a Bike Ride

Prefer to explore on two wheels? Luckily, many of Canmore's sightseeing trails are bicycle-friendly, and most are family-friendly, with level surfaces. You can tour the whole town on an easy 10-kilometer (6.1-mile) loop, ride out to Three Sisters, cruise the Bow River Loop, or even take the Legacy Trail to Banff.

Families will enjoy riding from Millennium Park to the West Canmore Playground. Millennium Park has an awesome bike park suitable for the youngest cyclists, and this route takes you across the Engine Bridge.

Solara Resort & Spa guests can take advantage of free mountain bike rentals, one of the Stay® | Well amenities

5. Sample Local Brews

One of the best things to do in Canmore, especially after a hike or bike ride, is to relax with a local craft beer. There are a few great breweries in downtown Canmore, including local faves, the Grizzly Paw Pub and Canmore Brewing Company. You can tour Canmore Brewing year-round, and "The Paw" has some of the best views in town. Both breweries are family-friendly.

6. Shop 'Til You Drop

Downtown Canmore is filled with unique local shops and galleries—enough that you could spend a full day just exploring them! This is, of course, subjective, but a few can't-miss shops include Stonewaters, Cafe Books, and Alberta's Own, where you can find one-of-a-kind goods from over 150 local makers.

Art enthusiasts, don't miss the Jeff Walker Gallery, the Indigenous-owned Carter-Ryan Gallery, or the Brandon T. Brown Wilderness Gallery.

7. Eat Your Way Through Town

All that shopping and walking is sure to work up an appetite, and downtown Canmore has plenty of places to satisfy it. Be sure to sample some poutine, fondue, and wild game, all unique local specialties.

  • Tavern 1883: best burgers in town

  • Crazyweed: casual fusion restaurant with a bit of everything

  • Where the Buffalo Roam: great cocktails and weekend brunch

  • The Wood: elevated pub fare and one of the best patios in town

  • Ramen Arashi: huge helpings of authentic Japanese ramen at shockingly affordable prices

  • Rocky Mountain Bagel Co: homemade New York-style bagels and cream cheese

8. Elevation Place

On cold or rainy days, when you just want to be inside, head to Elevation Place. Although it's best known for its indoor rock-climbing wall, Elevation Place is a community centre home to several of the best things to do in Canmore.

Hit the gym, take a dip in the pool, float the lazy river, fly down the water slide, relax in the massive hot tub, or cozy up with a good book in the library. If you're interested in climbing, the centre offers climbing lessons and gear rentals.

Touring Canmore: What Tours Should You Try During Your Vacation?

Few destinations pack as much of a punch when it comes to adventure and natural beauty as Canmore. Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Canmore truly has something for everyone. Those seeking strictly to relax in the mountains, adrenaline junkies looking for their next big thrill, and everyone in between.

Wondering what to do in Canmore? The best way to enjoy everything this small but mighty town has to offer is by booking some of the best tours in Canmore. Join us as we take a deep dive into several of the most exciting tours you can go on to make your stay even more memorable.

Cave Tours

Every type of traveller will enjoy exploring Rat's Nest Cave with Canmore Cave Tours—children (ages 10 and older) and adults, thrillseekers, and more casual adventurers. This cave, hidden underground below Grotto Mountain, offers a variety of ways to explore.

The Explorer Tour spends about two hours underground, winding through narrow passages. Looking for more excitement? Book the aptly-named Adventure Tour, which is the Explorer Tour plus a rappel (no experience or special skills required!). Amazingly, the cave consistently remains 5°C year-round, regardless of the weather above ground!

Check out Canmore Cave Tours' website for special events during your visit. Throughout the year, they host concerts, themed movie nights, and more, all INSIDE the cave!

Distillery Tours

Right next to Canmore Cave Tours, and five minutes from Solara Resort, Wild Life Distillery offers a literal taste of local flavor. The distillery has a tasting room and cocktail bar at this location, in addition to a production facility right around the corner where visitors can take distillery tours. These behind-the-scenes tours let you discover the art and science of creating small-batch spirits. Tours include a tasting, souvenir nosing glass, and one canned cocktail. At the bar, try an innovative specialty cocktail or order a tasting flight to sample four individual spirits.

Both the tasting room and distillery are open year-round, and tours are offered on Friday and Saturday afternoons. The cocktail bar and tasting room are open seven days a week. Solara guests can save 20% on a distillery tour when they call 403-678-2800 to book directly.

Dog Sled Tours

When winter is in full swing, one of the most bucket list-worthy Canmore activities is mushing through the Canadian Rockies. There's nothing quite like the combination of the pristine snow-blanketed landscape and the thrill of riding a sled pulled by dogs. At Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours, you can experience it in the heart of gorgeous Kananaskis Country, just outside Canmore.

Choose from four winter tours, ranging from a 2-hour "express" introduction to dog sledding, up to a full day or overnight trip. All tours include fireside hot beverages and goodies, and some include the option to add lunch.

Although the experience is, of course, completely different, you can also try out a sled dog tour in the summer. These tours include visiting the dog kennels and experiencing dryland adventure dog carting. There are even some options to pair the tour with whitewater rafting.

Horseback Riding

Exploring the picturesque scenery of the Rocky Mountains is one of the best Canmore activities, but it's even better on horseback. During the summer, Canadian Rockies Adventure Centre offers 1- and 2-hour guided trail rides. The rides start at Cross Zee Ranch, in the stunning Bow Valley on Canmore's northeastern edge. Best of all, you don't need any prior riding experience. The experienced guides tailor each ride to individual riding experience, skill levels, and preferences. Riders must be at least seven years old.

Helicopter Tours

Want to get a truly one-of-a-kind view during your Canmore visit...without having to hike to reach it? Book a helicopter tour. You will never forget the awe-inspiring view of the Canadian Rockies as you soar above the majestic peaks, glaciers, and turquoise lakes.

Tours depart from the Canmore Municipal Heliport, nestled at the base of the iconic Three Sisters Peaks, right next to Banff. Choose from four year-round options, all of them spectacular. The shortest flight, Three Sisters Peaks Tour, is one of the most popular and scenic, taking you along the Bow River and into Spray Valley Provincial Park. Other flight tours include up-close views of glaciers, the Continental Divide, and more.

River & Whitewater Rafting Tours

When summer arrives, trade the thrill of flying down the slopes for a different kind of rush: river rapids. Between the Bow and Kananaskis rivers, Canmore offers both adrenaline-pumping whitewater rafting tours and leisurely scenic floats, catering to beginners and seasoned rafters alike.

We highly recommend Canadian Rockies Rafting, and we've partnered with Canmore River Adventures to offer Solara Resort guests a 10% discount on float trips.

Regardless of which massage type you choose, they're all ideal for soothing sore muscles and promoting recovery.

  • Cupping Massage: A fantastic option for those seeking stress relief and rejuvenation. This therapy involves special cups being applied to the skin to create suction. It's an ancient holistic practice to release tension, enhance circulation, and activate the body's natural healing processes. Choose a 60- or 90-minute massage focusing on Therapeutic, Deep Tissue, Aromatherapy, or Relaxation to revitalize and refresh you.

  • Prenatal Massage: If you're an expectant mother, the Prenatal massage is tailored just for you. Our registered massage therapists are well-versed in the specialized care required during pregnancy, utilizing special prenatal cushions designed to accommodate growing bellies. This calming spa relaxation ensures that moms-to-be can indulge in self-care while prioritizing comfort.

For guests seeking a different kind of relief, Recovery Zone Spa at Solara also offers Therapeutic/Sports Recovery Massages and Reiki treatments. These are experiences rather than just services. The skilled therapists work their magic to help you unwind and find that inner peace you've been craving.

Saunas That Make You Say Ahh

After a day of exploring Canmore, step into one of the specialty saunas at The Recovery Zone. To help melt away stress or simply reflect on a day well spent, they have an Aromatherapy Steam Room, a cedar sauna, and an infrared sauna. Each has its distinct benefits, from soothing aromas to the warmth of cedar and the deep-penetrating infrared heat.

At the "polar" opposite end of the spectrum, there's also an invigorating Polar Plunge for adventurous souls. Especially when paired with a session in one of the saunas, it's the perfect way to cool down and get your blood circulating.

A Relaxation Oasis

The Recovery Zone Spa is far more than just massages and saunas. The expert team created an oasis centred around helping unwind and refresh. After your services, head to the Recovery Lounge to round out your spa relaxation experience perfectly. With complimentary beverages and a chilled-out, tranquil atmosphere, it's the ideal space to clear your mind and escape the daily hustle and bustle.

The Recovery Lounge also offers Compression Therapy and Mobility Vibration Therapy for enhanced muscle recovery. These innovative treatments help muscles recover faster and relieve tension, allowing you to get back out exploring with renewed energy.

The Importance of Relaxation on Vacation

For most, the idea of relaxing on vacation is a nice thought. However, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of exploring new places and rushing from one attraction to the next, but taking time for self-care is essential. Since you're already on vacation, there's no better time.

The Solara Resort spa isn't just about pampering; it also focuses on restoring your body and mind. Not only will this let you make the most of your getaway, but it goes a long way in helping you feel rejuvenated when it's time to get back to reality.

Vacations should be a break from the everyday stresses of life, and the spa is designed to complement that. Whether you opt for a massage, a sauna session, or a Polar Plunge, it's all about you and your well-being.

Canmore Nordic Centre offers some of the best cross-country skiing in the Rockies overall, while Sheep Valley Provincial Park is particularly excellent for beginners and to try snowshoeing.

4) Take the Grotto Canyon Ice Walk

It sounds a bit contradictory, but walking on ice in Grotto Canyon is one of the best and easiest winter activities in Canmore (really!). The family-friendly walk takes you to impressive frozen waterfalls, and you can do it yourself or book a guided tour. You can also go ice climbing in Grotto Canyon for a more extreme adventure!

5) Skate Away

From December through March, there are endless options to skate in and around Canmore. If you have your own skates, these are some great options:

  • Canmore Town Pond, a natural pond located close to the downtown area

  • Spray Lakes Reservoir, located in Kananaskis the natural valley reflects gorgeous mountain views.

  • Goat Pond, an exceptional place to wild ice skate near Canmore.

canmore activities in the spring

As the snow gradually melts and nature comes back to life with greenery and bright colours, Canmore offers diverse springtime activities for every interest.

1) Mountain biking at Canmore Nordic Centre

Hop on a mountain bike and explore over 100 kilometres of thrilling, well-maintained trails. Choose from a mix of downhill and cross-country and a range of experience and skill levels. Note that conditions are typically wet and muddy throughout much of the spring season, as trails continuously dry.

2) Look for wildlife on the Bow Valley Parkway

This spectacular 48-kilometre scenic drive is incredible any time of year. But in the spring, you can spot local animal residents such as elk, bighorn sheep, deer, and bears. Insider tip: time your drive for sunrise or sunset when animals are the most active.

3) Take a wild cave tour

Image courtesy of Canmore Cave Tours

Rat's Nest Cave offers year-round underground tours, and temperatures remain steady no matter what’s happening outside. That makes it the perfect activity for spring when the weather tends to be unpredictable and quite wet. Join a guided tour to explore the fascinating cave, with options from 2 hours to overnight.

4) Take a trip to the spa

It's a good idea to have an indoor activity or two in mind for those cold, wet spring days. Located adjacent to our main building, visit the Recovery Zone at One Wellness to enjoy the aromatherapy steam room, cedar and infrared saunas, cold plunge baths, and the recovery lounge. Planning ahead? Book a massage early to immerse in the full spa experience.

5)Taste local spirits at a distillery

For another indoor option, what could be better than visiting a local Bow Valley distillery? At Wild Life Distillery (WLD), you can sip on clean, artisan-crafted vodka and gin. Even better, guests at Solara Resort enjoy a 20% discount on all tours and tastings.

canmore summer activities

Summer in Canmore brings warm weather and long days, translating to endless opportunities to explore The Great Outdoors.

1) Take A Hike

In Canmore, you’re surrounded by hiking trails! The East End of Rundle (EEOR), this hike right in Canmore is one of the most popular in the area. Don't let the easy accessibility fool you, though – the steep, challenging hike is 5.8 kilometres round-trip and gains over 800 meters in elevation. A much less busy alternative to Banff and Jasper, Spray Lakes in Kananaskis Country is somewhat of a hidden gem. There are endless hiking trails to choose from, but Grassi Lakes or the Windtower Trail would both make an excellent start for hikers of all abilities. View the area on AllTrails to find the perfect hike for you and prepare beforehand.

2) Go rafting on the Bow River

Whether you opt for the thrill of white-water rafting or choose a more relaxed, family-friendly scenic float, it’s hard to top the incredible scenery along the Bow, with the Rockies towering overhead. Guests at the Grande Rockies can take advantage of a 10% discount on tours with Canmore River Adventures.

3) Take in the Scottish Highland Games

This fun, long-running tradition takes over Canmore at the very end of summer. Participants dressed in kilts compete in a variety of traditional Highlands games and play bagpipes, and spectators can also enjoy Scottish food and music.

4) Tee off for a round of golf

Even if you're not an avid or advanced golfer, you can't beat the scenery of the courses in Canmore. Head to Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club, which is highly regarded as one of the best courses in the entire country

5) Take Flight With a helicopter tour

Only a short drive away from Solara Resort, Alpine Helicopters Inc. offers sightseeing tours around Canmore and Banff. Ranging from 25-55 minute tours, take flight over the Canadian Rockies viewing pristine lakes, deep forests, and epic glaciers.

fall things to do in canmore

As the leaves change colour and the air gets that distinct crispness, Canmore has a unique, irresistible charm in the fall.

1) Enjoy a seasonal hike among larches

In mid- to late September, one of the best hikes in Canmore is Larch Valley. The 8.6-km out-and-back trail is in Banff National Park and features one of the largest stands of larches in the region. Witnessing their stunning autumn transformation is by far one of the best activities in Canmore!

2) Trail Riding

Take in the fall colours and experience the beauty of Kananaskis Valley on horseback. Embark on backcountry trails with Boundary Ranch for a variety of tours catering to different skill levels.

3) Go fly fishing

Fall is prime time for fishing Canmore's various rivers and streams. The water is calm, and your chances of catching large trout are at their highest. You can hire a guide who will know all the best fishing holes and offer up some tips and tricks, or go it alone. Some of the most popular areas include the Bow River, Quarry Lake, and Spray Lake.

4) Have afternoon tea at Mount Engadine Lodge

Just an hour from Solara Resort, Mount Engadine Lodge offers year-round daily tea service in the afternoon. The cost includes an elaborate charcuterie and dessert setup, and it's family-friendly, as well as open to the public.

5) Bike the Legacy Trail

This scenic 22-kilometre paved trail connects Canmore and Banff, and locals will tell you it really shines in the fall. The trail stays open until mid-October, which is the perfect time to show off the gorgeous foliage. Borrow a fat tire bike from the concierge at Solara, rent an e-bike in town, or bring your own two wheels to experience the trail.

Experience All Four Seasons at Solara Resort

Cold Weather Can't Stop Adventure: Best Winter Activities Around Canmore

When snow blankets the Canadian Rockies, and the annual chill sets in, the town of Canmore transforms into a glistening, picture-perfect winter wonderland. Nestled in the heart of Alberta, mere minutes from Banff National Park, Canmore is a natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts of all types – even, perhaps especially, in the winter. And on especially chilly days, or when you want a change of scenery, you can also head indoors for some of the best winter activities in Canmore.

Whether you seek out heart-pounding outdoor adventures or cozy, low-key indoor pursuits are more your speed, there's truly something for everyone here. And we mean "here" very literally – when you stay at Solara Resort Canmore, you'll have easy access to all the best winter activities around town.

Best Winter Activities in Canmore (Outside!)

1. Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding

Fans of downhill skiing or snowboarding will be right at home in Canmore. Mt. Norquay Ski Resort and Sunshine Village, home to breathtaking scenery and some of the best slopes in the Rockies, are each just a short drive from town. Both resorts include a wide variety of terrain plus offer their own unique features. Sunshine has Canada's "first and only heated chairlift," while Mt. Norquay hosts night skiing starting in January.

2. Cross-Country Skiing at Canmore Nordic Centre

Another of the best winter activities in Canmore is a different kind of skiing experience. If you're more of a cross-country fan, head to the Canmore Nordic Centre. This venue hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics and has an extensive network of Nordic ski trails suitable for all levels, plus a day lodge, onsite rentals, a well-lit nighttime loop, and lessons. You can also try snowshoeing, fat biking, sledding, or disc golf.

3. Grotto Canyon Icewalk

Exactly what it sounds like, the Grotto Canyon Icewalk allows you to walk through a dramatic canyon over a frozen creek. The highlight is staring up at the frozen waterfalls covering the canyon walls, some as tall as 30 meters! As you can imagine, this is one of the most popular and best winter activities in Canmore. For more of an adrenaline-inducing adventure (even if you have no prior experience!), you can also book guided ice climbing trips and climb the frozen falls.

4. Go Snowshoeing

With several excellent destinations, including some right in town, this is easily one of the best winter activities in Canmore. Of course, there are also several trails at Canmore Nordic Centre and nearby Kananaskis Country. In particular, Spray Valley Provincial Park has several well-marked trails perfect for both beginners and families.

Insider tip: with our Stay | Well Amenities, Solara Resort Canmore guests can take advantage of complimentary snowshoe rentals to discover their favourite trails on their own.

5. Check Dog Sledding Off Your Bucket List

Can you imagine a more quintessential winter activity than dog sledding? The thrill of mushing through the snow behind a team of huskies amid breathtaking mountain landscapes, is unforgettable.

This is also one of the most popular Solara Resort activities, and we highly recommend booking with Snowy Owl Dog Sled Tours. Packages range from two hours to overnights and include a campfire with warm cookies and cocoa.

6. Ice Skating

Part of the winter magic in Canmore is the ability to enjoy outdoor ice skating. There are several picturesque outdoor rinks in the winter, both natural and man-made. Rent a pair of skates from a variety of outfitters in town, then check out any one of several rinks

Note that you'll likely hear locals talking about "wild ice skating." While this can be a magical, family-friendly activity, be sure to research and check conditions. In some years, the lakes or ponds don't freeze enough to be safe for ice skating.

Best Indoor Winter Activities in Canmore

7. Indoor Rock Climbing at Elevation Place

When the weather is too harsh to spend time outside, Elevation Place is a local go-to for indoor adventures. The facility offers a variety of activities, including, of course, rock climbing. The world-class climbing wall has a challenge for everyone, from the newest beginners to advanced climbers. You can also take fitness classes and enjoy an indoor swimming pool, complete with a lazy river.

8. Explore Local Museums and Galleries

For an (indoor) dose of culture and history, spend an afternoon checking out Canmore's impressive museums and galleries. Start at the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre, where you can explore the region's rich heritage through interactive exhibits and art installations.

Then, stroll along Main Street and get a firsthand sense of Canmore's vibrant arts community. Browse the nearly one dozen galleries and studios, several owned by Indigenous local artists – you may even find a unique piece you absolutely have to take home! If you're more of the DIY type, pop into Crock a Doodle and paint your own pottery.

9. Indulge in a Spa Treatment

What's a winter getaway without some well-deserved self-indulgence? Arguably, one of the most popular Solara Resort activities, particularly when it's cold out, is booking a treatment at the Recovery Zone Spa. Here, you can book a massage, enjoy the steam room and polar plunge, and unwind in two types of saunas. There's also a recovery lounge and fitness centre to round out your spa day. Be sure to ask the front desk about discounted drop-in passes!

Bundle up, embrace the snow, and book a stay at Solara Resort to create lasting memories in this gorgeous winter wonderland. Our condo-style suites have full kitchens and 1-3 bedrooms, so you can settle in and make yourselves at home, whether it's for a weekend or a week.
